As a kid, did you call "Dibs" on sitting in a certain seat, getting a certain piece of the pie, doing the easiest chore, or any other number of things?? I did. I recall calling dibs on riding shotgun or getting the first of anything. As an adult you'd think we grow out of that but, gosh, I am sometimes stunned at how childish people can be in their 30s, 40s, and even older. Have they not learned their lesson in life?
I have encountered this in looking into non-profit organizations. Do you have any idea how many non-profit organizations there are surrounding the topic of "cancer"? There are THOUSANDS. I wonder, do the top 5 cancer organizations out there hate each other? If two people who work with two different Diabetes advocacy organizations serving the mission of cancer advocacy ran into each other in a dark alley, would they duke it out? Seems like a strange thing to even imagine, doesn't it? However, in my experience, an organization calling "DIBS" on providing information and support on a topic or illness has been quite common. Catfights and bickering can, at times, overpower the reason an advocacy group exists. That is just so, so sad.
The MINE MINE MINE mentality out there is really sick. And I don't mean sick in the way that the kids these days say "sick" about something they like. I mean, it's so sick it makes me want to puke. Any organization who believes that they are THE only one who can provide support or information to the point that they engage in childish antics to undermine their "opponent" should, in my opinion, cease to exist, because they are not serving their mission. To think that the focus is so much of the time on ANYTHING BUT THE MISSION is despicable... To know that, for example, people DIE from illnesses while organizations are sparing for the power and control is so wrong.
The ethics of it all, or lack thereof, is an absolute disservice to the world. Come-on people. This is NOT politics. This is NOT a couple of car dealerships trying to get customers or Walmart fighting with Kmart. WHO exactly do you think you're helping when you use your energies in this selfish manner?
The snotty teenager in me is yelling, "HELLO???? Too many bats in your belfry to understand what I am getting at? Then I give up. You're a lost cause. Just take your ball and go home. You apparently don't play well with others. Hop on your broomstick and fly away!"
Wow. It takes all kinds, and it's so awful to think that this is where we live and this is where we are raising our children. What happened to sharing the love or being brothers and sisters? Can't we all just sing together, "I'd like to teach the world to sing in perfect harmony," have a coke and be happy? May goodness prevail. Or, may the best man win, depending on what your view is on the matter.
